Senate backers of a housing bill that the White House opposes cleared a procedural hurdle on Tuesday, moving toward expected passage of the measure that would create a multi-billion dollar mortgage refinancing fund.
ADVERTISEMENT With home prices sliding steeply and foreclosures rising, supporters got more than the 60 votes needed to limit debate on the bill, which President George W.
Bush has vowed to veto.
A vote on passage could come as early as Wednesday, with Democrats and many of Bush's fellow Republicans backing the sweeping package, which would also retool the regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the nation's two largest mortgage financing organizations.
